Qantas Empire Airways Limited was formed as a joint venture between QANTAS and Imperial Airways of London, to operate the Empire Air Mail scheme between the United Kingdom and Australia. QEA was responsible for operating the Singapore to Brisbane sector of the route.

The Qantas Airways Boeing 747-438 VH-OJK 'Newcastle' departed Sydney (Kingsford Smith) on its ferry flight to the United States (Victorville, California) as Flight QF6019 for storage and eventual sale. On engine shut-down the aircraft had flown 83,760 hours with 10,876 cycles.

The Alliance Airlines Fokker F28-0100 VH-FGB arrived at Brisbane having completed its delivery flight from the United Kingdom (Norwich) as Flight SXI1801. The aircraft was in the special livery to celebrate the 90th Anniversary of the crossing of the Pacific Ocean by Charles Kingsford Smith. It entered service later that day operating Flight UTY371 from Brisbane to Alice Springs (The Granites).
